Virgin and Child in wood carved in the round... - Lot 30 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Virgin and Child in wood carved in the round with remains of gilding and polychromy. Seated on a cushion, with her bust upright, Mary holds her Son on her left knee; she presents him with a pear in her right hand while Jesus carries the globe in one hand and blesses with the other; the Virgin's attitude is haughty and elegant; crown placed on her long hair whose strands rest on her shoulders and fall down her back; beautiful face with fine features, slit eyes and small mouth; she is wearing a dress with a neckline bordered with pearls and a cloak attached to her chest by a gold-plated clasp. Spain, Castile, attributed to Gil de Siloé and his workshop (Antwerp ?, 1440 - Burgos, circa 1501), circa 1480 Height: 43 cm - Width: 24.5 cm (head of the Virgin reattached, wear to the gilding and polychromy, crack on the back) Little is known about the career of Gil de Siloé, a sculptor of Flemish origin, the main representative of late Gothic art in Castile in the service of the Catholic Kings. His activity is mainly documented during the last two decades of the 15th century, and his masterpiece in alabaster remains the sumptuous tomb in the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores near Burgos. This elegant seated Virgin combines several characteristics of her style, a typical example of a successful Spanish-Flemish syncretism: faces with fine features reminiscent of Malinese statuettes, long wavy locks of hair resting on the shoulders and falling back, complexity and richness of the drapery with uneven and angular folds. Sculpted on all sides, it was intended for the private devotion of a rich Castilian family.
