Pair of ceroferous angels in wood carved... - Lot 48 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Pair of ceroferous angels in wood carved in the round, gilded and polychromed. One knee on the ground, each holding a pike pole with both hands, the body turned in profile; faces with almond-shaped eyes, small mouths and heavy chins; edge of the mantles with punched decoration; bouffant hair reaching backwards. Mechelen, first half of the 16th century Heights: 24 cm and 25.6 cm (some accidents, missing wings) These charming sculptures would have belonged to a typical 16th-century Mechelen altarpiece for female convents. These altarpieces consisted of a box, generally rectangular, closed by a glass, in which were arranged statuettes in a luxuriant decoration of flowers and plants. They were most often dedicated to the virginity of Mary and these angels were to be placed on either side of the Virgin to illuminate her virginal beauty and purity.
