Pair of interior panels of altarpiece shutters... - Lot 52 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Pair of interior panels of altarpiece shutters in carved and polychromed softwood representing two saints. The saints are in high relief, barefoot on a console, each holding a book and their respective attribute, the sword for one, the keys for the other; young and beardless faces framed by half-long curly hair; they are dressed in a tunic and a cloak, one side of which returns to the front; panels decorated with silver scrolls on a red background. Southern Austria, Vorarlberg, circa 1500 Total height: 128.9 cm - Total width: 52 cm (hilt, handle and sword blade of later period, some polychromatic repairs) Coming from an altarpiece of the northern Alps, these two figures probably represent local saints. As the sword is a reconstruction, it is quite possible that the intention was to transform this saint into St. Paul - who should have had a long beard - to match the young saint holding the keys, who cannot be Peter, who is always represented with a beard and a bald spot.
