Peace kiss plate in enamel painted in grisaille... - Lot 56 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Peace kiss plate in enamel painted in grisaille with rose highlights for the skin tones and gold representing the Nativity, counter enamel in fondant. On the right, the Virgin is kneeling, hands clasped, before her Son lying naked in front of her; on the left, Joseph is stepping over the threshold of a door, taking off his hat with one hand and holding a candle with the other; the stable is symbolized by a classical architecture in ruins Limoges, attributed to Martial Ydeux, mid-16th century Height: 8.3 cm - Width: 6.4 cm In a gilded copper frame (restorations at the edge, cracks, small chip filled in) Book consulted: S. Baratte, Les émaux peints de Limoges, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 2000, pp 113-119 Four other Limousin enamels are known to reproduce this original composition of the Nativity, one of which is in the Cottreau collection (sale Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 28 and 29 April 1910, lot 76) and another in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The grisaille here is executed with great delicacy in the fading of skin tones and the subtlety of the drapery. This is a painter experienced in this particular art, as was Martial Ydeux, who left us the series of ten large grisaille plates illustrating the Passion preserved in the Musée du Louvre, four of which bear the signature MD (inv. OA 11134 to OA 11143).
