Saint Wilgeforte in carved oak with slight... - Lot 57 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Saint Wilgeforte in carved oak with slight traces of polychromy. The bearded saint is represented crucified, her feet attached to the cross by ropes; her head is crowned with a tortilus and her face framed by two long wavy locks falling down the front of her shoulders to her hips; she is dressed in a long dress belted by a scarf with slit sleeves; deep and angular folds. Picardy or Flanders, circa 1500/1510 Height : 38,6 cm - Width : 20,6 cm (some missing parts, notably the hands) Works consulted : L. Réau, Iconographie de l'Art chrétien, Iconographie des saints, T III, pp.1342-1345 P. Béguerie - De Paepe (under the direction of), La Sculpture picarde à Abbeville vers 1500 autour du altarpiece de Thuison, Tournai, 2001. Devoid of any historical reality and born of an iconographic misinterpretation, Saint Wilgeforte was the daughter of a pagan king of Portugal who wanted to force her to marry. Having taken a vow of virginity, the princess refused and begged God to disfigure her in order to discourage suitors. The Lord granted her request by making her grow a beard on her chin. Her horrified father accused her of witchcraft and had her crucified so that she would resemble the fiancé she had chosen to the end.
