Group of two children in marble sculpted... - Lot 60 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Group of two children in marble sculpted in the round. Completely naked and seated on a naturalistic terrace, one of the two has his finger bitten by his companion; graceful and lively attitudes. Florence, attributed to Sandro di Lorenzo di Smeraldo known as the Master of the Unruly Children (1483 - c. 1554), first quarter of the 16th century Height: 17 cm - Length: 18 cm - Depth: 7.7 cm (slight accidents, crack to the terrace) Works consulted: L. Principi, The Master of the Unruly Children: River God and Bacchus, Milan, Carlo Orsi (Trinity Fine Gallery Catalogue, 39), 2016; Exhibitions Paris - Milan 2020/2021, Le Corps et l'Âme, Musée du Louvre - Castello Sforzesco, cat. p 216-217. This charming group can be related to a terracotta group of the same theme, of larger size, preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum and given to the Master of Turbulent Children (inv. 253-1876, fig.), of which there is another version in the Bode Museum in Berlin. This long-unnamed Florentine sculptor was definitively identified as Sandro di Lorenzo di Smeraldo by the art historian Lorenzo Principi in a 2016 publication. Born in Florence in 1583, he appears in archival documents as early as 1511, but his activity is only documented between 1518 and his death in 1554. This eclectic sculptor is best known for his work in terracotta and wax, particularly in the creation of death masks, although few works in marble are attributed to him. This group closely resembles his style and was intended to satisfy the taste of collectors for small sculptures for domestic use.
