Rare walnut wine gauge with gilt brass mounting. Square section, it is equipped with a sliding ruler punctuated with pins. Engraved decoration on the tips bordered with scrolls: upper tip, one side with a reading window, two sides with a triangle inscribed in a circle, itself in a square on point, the fourth bearing a cartouche armorié d.. with the band d.. charged with three mounts of six cups which may correspond to the simplified arms of the Ciocchi del Monte family of Pope Julius III, end, volutes and inscription . PON . X. B . II . QVADRATI ; lower end, three sides with barrel at different angles and, on the fourth, a Bacchus seated on a barrel, a cup in his hand, end bearing the motto OMNIA IN PONDERE ET MENSVRA (In weight and measure of all things) ; end of the ruler bearing the letters R . T . P . and the date 1562, mason's tools, square, compass and plumb line, geometrical motifs at the end. Under the coat of arms, cut and inlaid ornament with two loops topped by six cups as a reminder of the coat of arms. Italy, second half of the 16th century, 1562 Length : 54,8 cm - Section : 1,9 cm x 1,8 cm (some wear to the gilding)
