Boxwood plaque carved in high relief representing... - Lot 79 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Boxwood plaque carved in high relief representing the Virgin of Pity. Composition with a tight framing with the Virgin, in bust and in profile, her head covered by a heavy veil decorated with gold motifs of which only tiny traces remain, contemplating her dead Son whose head she supports with her left hand and one of her arms with the other. Nice patina. Netherlands, mid 17th century Height : 19,2 cm - Width : 12,9 cm (small restorations, slight lack of the lower right corner)) Among the engraved plates representing bas-reliefs by the famous Flemish ivory maker Francis van Bossuit, we can observe this type of tight plan around mid-body figures.
