Pair of silver, gilt silver and black paste... - Lot 80 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Pair of silver, gilt silver and black paste bottles. Flat body decorated with cabochons with a beaded border, an oval cabochon in the centre surrounded by ten smaller ones, four cabochons on each side; the cabochons are decorated with niello, the oval ones with a cruciform motif and the smaller ones with a rosette; spherical stoppers. Spain, 1600/1625 Heights: 14.4 cm and 14.9 cm (missing black paste coating) Few pieces of goldsmithery can be related to this rare pair of bottles. Apart from a bottle that has passed into the London art market, only one other pair with the same type of decoration is known and can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. M. 288-1956, fig.). Of comparable dimensions, these bottles are square in cross-section and have the same black paste decoration with cabochons bordered by pearls, although the corners are enriched with gilded silver angles. The museum wonders about the nature of the black coating and suggests dried leather - unlikely - or a paste made from crushed shells. This fragile material seems to have survived the centuries poorly, which explains the relative state of preservation of the examples that have come down to us and, consequently, the rarity of this type of piece. The slightly rounded oval and circular plates with their niello motifs are reminiscent of those inlaid with blue or green enamel on Hispanic dishes, ewers and cups. fig.
