A serpentine covered pot with a gilded and... - Lot 83 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A serpentine covered pot with a gilded and embossed copper mounting. Ovoid body cut in diamond-shaped facets; lid decorated with a combat scene between horsemen and soldiers on foot in a dense composition; turned top knob. Dresden, 17th century Total height: 17.5 cm (small cracks) Book consulted: Exposition Paris 2011, Sous l'égide de Mars, armures des Princes d'Europe, Musée de l'Armée, cat. P 230-235 The decoration on the lid is based on the battle themes that adorn many pieces of Renaissance armour featuring warriors fighting frantically, men and horses entangled. This same composition - whose engraved source has not been identified - can be found on several rondaches attributed to the Antwerp armourer Eliseus Libaerts (before 1525, after 1572), including the so-called Henry II rondache in the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin (inv. W 1006, PC 8989) and the one in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève (inv. F0078, fig.).
