Large ivory plaque carved in bas-relief with... - Lot 87 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Large ivory plaque carved in bas-relief with remains of polychromy and traces of gilding representing Jesus teaching the Doctors after an engraving (reversed) by Philippe Thomassin (Troyes, 1536-1606) on a composition by Martin de Vos (Antwerp, ca. 1531-1603) (fig.a). Against a background of architecture topped by a balustrade, Jesus is seated on a platform in the center of the scene; he addresses his audience, arranged around him, consisting of more than a dozen characters including two women and a monk; the edge of the plate highlighted by a molded frame. Moulded ebony frame. Indo or cingalo-Portuguese, first half of the 17th century Height : 15,9 cm - Width : 11,9 cm - Gross weight : 386 g Old label on the back with the inscription Marie Thérèze [de] Saint Venant The Amedeo Lia Museum in La Spezia (Italy) has in its collections an ivory plaque of a similar composition, but with very simplified details, as Christ does not, for example, lean on a lectern with an elegant base like here (inv. A65, fig.b). The workmanship is also less refined, far removed from the precision of the chisel that sculpted this bas-relief.
