Crucifix made of fruit wood carved in the round. The stipe of the cross is in the form of a trunk rising from a skull resting on bones and symbolizing the Tree of Life; the tempting serpent, with the apple in its mouth, surrounds the skull of Adam; The Virgin and St. John, standing on the roots, stand on either side of the foot of the cross; Christ with arms in a V-shape and legs offset to the right; titulus engraved with the letters INRI (Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews) on a scroll hanging at the top of the stipe. Southern Germany, 17th century Height: 51.2 cm (small missing feet) Reserved for private devotion, this interesting crucifix gives an interpretation of the Tree of Life symbolizing the sacrifice of Jesus for the redemption of the first Man and of Humanity.
