Carved boxwood nutcracker also used as a... - Lot 97 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Carved boxwood nutcracker also used as a nutcracker in the form of pincers, the ends representing a large head of a bearded old man wearing a cap. France or Netherlands, 17th century Height : 23.1 cm - Width : 6 cm (slight damage to the beard and whiskers, addition of a screw) These nutcrackers carved with a bearded head, usually wearing a cap, are among the oldest models. An example from the Renaissance period, decorated with a helmeted man's head, is dated 1569. This one, with its face marked by age, is close to the nutcrackers of the 17th century, a period corroborated by the flapped collar in vogue under Louis XIII. Book consulted: A. Wagner, The Art & Character of Nutcrackers, The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, 2005, pp 7-25.
