Pair of erotic ivory and ebony playing dice... - Lot 99 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Pair of erotic ivory and ebony playing dice carved in the round, representing a nude seated man and woman, their hands resting on their posteriors, showing their sex. The bodies are inscribed in a cube with black dots on each side corresponding to the six numbers of an ordinary dice. Southern Germany, 17th century Heights: 2.7 cm and 2.5 cm - Widths: 2.5 cm and 2.3 cm - Gross weight: 28 g The Louvre Museum has two smaller pairs of dice of the same theme, one from the Sauvageot collection (inv. OA 167). This collector sold another pair to the Musée de Cluny (inv. ECl 1813). Several series in the Residenz in Munich suggest that these small objects were made in southern Germany.
