A native wood marquetry panel depicting the... - Lot 102 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A native wood marquetry panel depicting the Abduction of Ganymede (Ovid, Metamorphoses, 10, 143-297) after an engraving by Crispin de Passe I (1602, fig. a) Bohemia, school of Cheb, workshop of Adam Eck, circa 1650/60 Height: 34.9 cm - Width: 17.3 cm Framed with a moulded bead (small cracks, slight lacks and restoration) Book consulted: Exhibition Lille 2002-2003, Lumière et ténèbres. Art et civilisation du baroque en Bohême, Palais des Beaux-Arts, cat. 36, p 82-83. This beautiful panel of marquetry in various woods of local origin is typical of the Cheb school (Egra in French), located in Western Bohemia, today on the border with Germany. It is a work of beautiful virtuosity playing with subtlety on the colors of the species used by varying the reliefs and the aspect of the surfaces. The cabinetmaker alternates smooth and guilloche surfaces, using chisels, chisels and punches. This panel was intended to decorate the inner side of a cabinet leaf like the one in Libochovice Castle (inv. LB 2992, fig. b). As with this one, the marker was inspired by engravings by the Dutch draughtsman and engraver Crispin de Passe the Elder. He skilfully transposed the horizontal composition into a vertical panel without detracting from the legibility of the scene, highlighting the nudity of the young mortal before he is abducted by Zeus in the form of an eagle.
