Bust of a man in walnut carved in the round.... - Lot 103 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Bust of a man in walnut carved in the round. Head wearing a large hat with a feather; face with vigorous features, moustache and goatee, framed by the voluminous curls of the half-length hair. Le Puy-en-Velay, attributed to Pierre Vaneau (Montpellier, 1653 - 1694, Le Puy), circa 1680/1690 Height: 47,5 cm - Width: 24 cm (end of the feather broken and glued back together, crack) Book consulted: F. Vialet, La Sculpture Française au XVIIe siècle - Pierre Vaneau, le Puy, 1980. In the treatment of the face of this character, we recognize the hand of this great sculptor of the French 17th century, Pierre Vaneau, representative of the art of the southern half and the center of France. Born in Montpellier to a carpenter and sculptor father, he was approached by the bishop of Puy, Armand de Béthune, who invited him to settle in Monistrol-sur-Loire in the Velay. He arrived probably around 1680 and remained in the Puy region until his death. He worked as a sculptor and specialized in walnut work, in which he excelled. He left us several works of his hand, including one of the most famous, the Trophy raised to the glory of John III Sobieski, King of Poland, a monument that remained in the state of a model and never erected. The Louvre Museum has several bas-reliefs of this monument, which are now in the Crozatier Museum (inv. RF 2033, fig.). One can recognize these same faces with their pronounced features, especially those of the Orientals, with their pronounced superciliary arches, their strong noses, and their rugged gaze. The sculptor shows a predilection for the representation of moustaches and feathers treated in a similar manner on this beautiful bust.
