Christ in fruitwood carved in the round... - Lot 104 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Christ in fruitwood carved in the round with polychrome highlights and glass eyes. Head tilted towards the right arm, crowned with a crown made of very thin wooden strands; face with emaciated features marked by pain, with imploring eyes and open mouth; hair with strong waves falling down the back, with locks resting on the right shoulder; moustache and bifid beard with fine tight curls, open V-shaped arms with clenched hands; long body with apparent venous network, marked by wounds on knees, elbows and back; perizonium held by a real cord leaving right leg uncovered; parallel and bony legs with superimposed internally rotating feet.
Spain, Castile ?, late 17th century Total height : 48,5 cm
(some missing fingers and eyes)
This Christ of exaggerated expressiveness is typical of the Spanish school of the Golden Age.
Its execution was particularly careful, the head having been made in two parts in order to introduce the eyes and the tongue, thus pushing the concern for realism very far.
