Bronze plaque in high relief with a medallic... - Lot 108 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Bronze plaque in high relief with a medallic patina representing Saint Jerome penitent in the desert. Southern Germany, second half of the 17th century Height : 14 cm - Width : 10,1 cm Labels on the back 259 and 637. Stylish frame. This very fine cast plate is the work of a great sculptor. Other examples have not been found. However, the same composition of the Hermit Saint can be seen on a fruitwood bas-relief sold at Sotheby's (New York, June 8, 2007, lot 458) as attributed to the entourage of Daniel Schenk (1633-1691). This bas-relief was presented as a pair, with a depiction of Mary Magdalene, but in a simplified version without the lion and landscape details in the background. The bronze plaque, which is of a completely different design, seems to have inspired other sculptors working in the many workshops in southern Germany.
