Honoré de BALZAC.
Honorine. Paris, De Potter, 1844. 2 volumes in-8: red half-sheepskin, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets and black fleurons, entirely untrimmed (period binding). First edition: dedicated to Achille Devéria, it is uncommon. It was missing from the romantic collection of Maurice Escoffier. Exemplaire relié par Spachmann ou par Wagner, entièrement non rogné, pour Balzac lui-même. In an article published in the Courrier balzacien, Thierry Bodin underlines that "the personal copies of Balzac are very rare. They were mostly dispersed at the pre and post-death sales of Mme de Balzac [Mme Hanska] in March and April 1882." The bindings were all executed either by Spachmann or Wagner, or by both craftsmen when they worked together, as directed by the writer. "Also presented in a more or less uniform manner: smooth red basane spine (decorated with a few gilt fillets and cold fleurons) with fairly soft seams that allow the book to be opened properly, this one untrimmed, with full margins, and largely protected by larger boards lined with marbled paper, the endpapers still being of white paper on which it would be possible to write." A fine copy despite some spotting. Provenance: Honoré de Balzac. - Mme Hanska, widow of Honoré de Balzac, in whose sale about 2,500 volumes were offered in lots (Paris, 25 April 1882).
