Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY.
Poetry. Caen, Impr. Hardel, 1854. 16-page booklet with (2) ff. 47 pp, (1) f. of table, (1) blank f.: paperback, blank cover. Red demimarine folder, slipcase. Rare first edition, printed in an edition of 36 copies on Hollande laid paper, not sold. The anonymous and untitled collection displays on the front of the second leaf the arms of Barbey d'Aurevilly; azure with two silver barbs,... Elegantly printed, it is dedicated to his "very dear friend" G.-S. Trebutien: "To whom should I dedicate these verses, which should perhaps remain unpublished? By offering them to you, I do not give them to you: I give them back to you... You who know how to edit as Benvenuto Cellini chiseled, you have cut my pebbles as one cuts diamonds." Remarkable autograph dispatch signed in red ink on the first page: to the Great Poet who wrote Joseph Delorme, to Monsieur Sainte-Beuve + may the Critic turn away, with indulgence, and may the Poet, generous as genius, give me hospitality! Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly Numerous pencil strokes in the margins and underlining, no doubt in Sainte-Beuve's hand. On the provenance, see previous issue. Mottling, small loss to the cover.
