Alphonse DAUDET.
Letters from my mill. Impressions and memories. Paris, J. Hetzel, no date [1869]. In-12: red chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated with small pieces of pink mosaic morocco, double framing à la Du Seuil on the boards with gilt fleurons in the corners, gold filleted edges, chocolate morocco linings framed with gilt fillets and fleurons, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Devauchelle) First edition. Not printed on large paper. "The originality of this collection of tales remains today masked by the fame of some of them (La Chèvre de M. Seguin or Le Sous-préfet aux champs, for example). Les Lettres de mon moulin are in fact characterized by a dark, sometimes tragic overall colour. The brief story of the Arlésienne, popularized in its stage version by Bizet's music, is the most implacable illustration of this" (En français dans le texte, n° 291). A very fine copy.
