Alphonse DAUDET.
Breadwinner. Moeurs contemporaines. Paris, Eugène Fasquelle, 1898. Large in-12 book entirely mounted on tabs: red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with gilded fillets and mosaic of lemon morocco, boards framed in the same way, gilded fillets on the edges and on the inner frame of red morocco, gilded silk lining and endpapers, gilded edges, cover and spine preserved (E. & A. Maylander). First edition. One of the first two copies on parchment. Started in 1895, Soutien de famille was finished by Alphonse Daudet in 1897, shortly before his death in December. He did not see it published during his lifetime. A beautiful letter from Émile Zola to the author's widow, Mme Alphonse Daudet, has been mounted at the top of the page: Dear Madam, I have waited to be here, in a bit of peace and quiet, to read "Soutien de famille". I have just finished reading it and I want to tell you at once the delightful hours I have just spent with the one who is no more. All my memories have been awakened, and it was he who told me this living story, it was with him that I talked about the things and the people that we lived together. His last book will remain as one of his truest and most poignant. (Médan, April 9, 1898: autograph letter signed, 9 pages in-8.) Impeccable binding by Maylander. Copy of the Charles Hayoit library (III, 2001, nº 404).
