The coronation of Charles X. Paris, Ladvocat, no date [1825]. Plaquette in-8 of (4) ff. the first blank, 16 pp.: stapled, with a later blank cover. First edition. Ornamented title printed in blue and black. Washed copy. (Carteret I, p. 395: "A rare booklet which had at the time a great success and consecrated Victor Hugo's talent."- Bertin, nº 18.) Two autograph letters of the poet are enclosed. A letter addressed on December 5, 1822 to Baron Trouvé announcing his forthcoming reading, at the Société des Bonnes-Lettres, of his ode entitled: Louis XVII. (1 p. in-8, address on page 4, obliterated.) The second letter, dated Sunday June 12 [1825] addressed to the editor of the Journal des Débats: bearing the note "Confidential" at the top, it accompanied a set of proofs of the Coronation of Charles X. "The indulgence with which Monsieur le Rédacteur des Débats has welcomed my ode on the funeral of Louis XVIII makes me hope that he will grant the same benevolence to the one I have the honour of sending him on the coronation of Charles X. His Majesty having deigned to call me to his coronation, this journey is the cause of the delay in the composition and publication of my ode. This is a test. The ode will not be published until the day after tomorrow, Tuesday. [...]"
