VICTOR HUGO.
Les Rayons et les Ombres. Paris, Delloye, 1840. In-8, blue half calf, smooth spine decorated with a gilt rocaille decoration with bird, flower and butterfly, marbled edges (period binding). First edition. A major collection of forty-four pieces, including Tristesse d'Olympio and Oceano Nox. The important preface and inaugural poem assign the poet a mission as prophet and seer. His responsibility is to guide other men to the path of justice and truth. The Hugolian enterprise is in unison with the humanitarian commitment of Vigny or Lamartine. Autograph letter signed on the false title: To Mr. Alfred Michiels from the author V.H. A man of letters, critic and translator, Alfred Michiels (1813-1892) was first and foremost an eminent historian of art, notably of German and Flemish painting. A fine copy despite the slightly oiled spine. From the library of Robert and Jeanne Percheron, with bookplate.
