Ruy Blas. Drama in five acts, in verse. New edition. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1872. In-8: tobacco morocco, spine with ornate nerves, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gold filleted edges, gilt lace inside, parchment lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover preserved (Canape). New edition given on the occasion of the revival of the play at the Odéon theatre on 19 February 1872. One of 25 copies on China paper (no. 2). Engraved frontispiece in triple state. A unique copy compiled by Pierre de Lacretelle, enriched with numerous documents which he lists at the end: - 1 unpublished frontispiece by Morin with signed autograph dispatch from the artist to Aglaüs Bouvenne; - Portrait of Victor Hugo; etching by Reygamey in proof before the letter; - To France, lithographed poem by Victor Hugo for the 1878 World's Fair, with tiny photographic portrait of the poet pasted on; - Engraved portrait of Sarah Bernhardt; - Signed autograph letter from Sarah Bernhardt addressed to Victor Hugo (2 pp. in-16); - Program printed in several tones for the revival of Hernani; - Treaty signed by Victor Hugo for the revival of Ruy Blas at the Odéon theatre, dated 9 May 1867. - The play having been censored, the revival was not staged; - Autograph letter signed by Victor Hugo addressed to Charles Asselineau: praise for the latter's collection of short stories, La Double Vie, published in 1858 (Hauteville House, April 8, 2 pp. in-8); - Autograph letter signed by Paul Meurice to Victor Hugo (4 pp. in-16) concerning the revival of Ruy Blas; - Original programme of a private performance of Ruy Blas on April 2, 1868 by a group of republican students; - Autograph letter signed by Théodore de Banville addressed to Victor Hugo concerning the revival of Ruy Blas (Paris, February 22, 1872, 2 pp. in-8). A very fine copy. The letter from Victor Hugo to Charles Asselineau was added later.
