Joris-Karl HUYSMANS.
Là-Bas. Paris, Tresse & Stock, 1891. In-12 of (2) ff., 441 pp., (1) f.: aubergine morocco, ribbed spine decorated with cold filets, six cold filets framing the boards, inner frame of morocco decorated with gilt filets, black silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved (Canape, 1923). First edition. One of 10 copies on Hollande paper (nº 19), second edition after 10 japon. A great success of scandal of the novel where naturalism clashes with the world of black magic. It was banned from all railway station stalls by the Bibliothèque des Chemins de Fer. Durtal reflects the tormented evolution that led Huysmans to convert to Catholicism. The hero is introduced to adultery with the hysterical wife of a Catholic writer and to Satanism with an excommunicated canon who feeds hosts to his white mice. A very good copy. (Connolly, 100 Key Books of Modern Literature, no. 10. - Clouzot, p. 156: "One of the most sought-after titles.")
