Les Minutes de sable mémorial. Paris, Éditions du Mercure de France, 1894. In-16 square: black long-grained jansenist morocco, smooth spine, untrimmed, gilt head, black illustrated cover and spine printed in gold (modern binding). First edition printed at 216 copies, on author's account: one of 197 on Arches laid paper. This is one of the first editorial achievements of the Mercure de France publishing house, of which Jarry was a shareholder. First book of Alfred Jarry and his only poetic collection. Entitled Linteau, the introductory text illustrates his aesthetics and his ideas on literature: "It looks more like a declaration of war to the reader than an invitation" (Patrick Besnier). It is followed by prose, versified poems and dramatic fragments in which M. Ubu appears. The drama Haldernablou sings in a lyrical mode of homosexual love, under the influence of the Chants de Maldoror, of which Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) was one of the first readers. Nine original woodcuts by Alfred Jarry. They are printed in blue, bistre or black, including the coat of arms printed in gold on the black cover.
