Large in-8, half magenta with corners, white illustrated cover and spine preserved, case (Noulhac). First edition. 30 wood-engraved plates and vignettes in the text by Laisné and Rouget. It is complete with pages 469-72 occupied by a prospectus for the work and sometimes missing. Another illustrated prospectus, different from the first one, bound in fine (4 pp.). Attached, loose, the following three documents: - an autograph letter signed by Vidocq, dated October 23, 1849, addressed to a lady (2 pp. in-8), relating to an action taken against an indelicate debtor. - an autograph note signed by the same, dated March 6, 1842, written on Vidocq's letterhead, Breveté du Roi, Ex-chef de la police de la sûreté... - A printed statement by the same describing the activity of his administration, a private intelligence agency founded in 1833, addressed in the form of a letter to a Mr. H. Debray, in Arras (handwritten address). Rare and interesting documents relating to the former convict who became a policeman, then a private detective.
