Fifth edition illustrated with 425 drawings by Gustave Doré. Paris, Société générale de librairie, 1855 Small in-8, strictly period binding in full dark blue chagrin, boards covered with a repeating decoration of gilt stars inserted in a diamond pattern drawn with cold filets, the whole in a frame of two gilt filets forming interlaces in the corners, spine decorated with gilt filets with gilt mention at the foot, inner lace, edges decorated with a rich repeating decoration with chased gilt motifs and painted in red and green First illustrated edition and first printing of the 425 woodcut illustrations by Gustave doré. The copy presents three of the four first printing remarks reported by Carteret, who states: "[These] first engraved leaves [...] are remarkable for the beauty of the proofs which often equal those of the chine". A superb and very remarkable copy covered in a rare decorated binding with very finely chased and painted edges, perfectly executed. Ex-libris Jules Feder in gilt letters at the bottom of the spine. Slight foxing to the endpapers and to the faux-titre.
