BALZAC (Honoré de).
Paris marié. Philosophie de la vie conjugale, commentée par Gavarni. Paris, Hetzel, 1846. Small in-8, half blue morocco bradel with corners, spine decorated with rocaille motifs, untrimmed, blue mute cover and spine preserved (Carayon). First separate edition of this text, first published by Balzac in the Tableau de Paris and first printing of the illustrations. 20 out-of-text figures and 40 woodcut vignettes in the text after Gavarni. One of the four rare works forming the collection of the Petit tableau de Paris published by Hetzel from 1844 to 1846 (see also our n° 38, Briffault. Paris dans l'eau). One of the very rare copies on china paper, printed on one side only, according to the description given by Carteret (III, p. 470): six of the off-texts, which do not exist on this paper, have been "chinaed [by] Hitter, the renowned washerman; they are recognizable by the transparency of the weaknesses and unevenness of the paper".
