BÉRANGER (Pierre-Jean de).
Old, new and unpublished songs, with vignettes by Devéria and coloured drawings by Henri Monnier. Followed by the trials of the author. Paris, Baudouin frères, 1828, two volumes - Chansons nouvelles et dernières dédiées, à M. Lucien Bonaparte. Paris, Perrotin, 1833 - Chansons. Supplément. Paris, chez tous les marchands de nouveautés, 1829. Two works in one volume. Together three volumes in-8, midnight blue half-maroquin with long grain, spines finely decorated with mosaic pastilles in red morocco, untrimmed, green illustrated covers and spine of the Chansons nouvelles et dernières preserved (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First printing of these three works forming a complete set of Béranger's Chansons (Carteret, III, pp. 72-73). The first two volumes, published in issues without a general cover, are illustrated with a suite of 40 pen-and-ink lithographed and brush-coloured drawings by Henry Monnier, a suite that is very rarely complete in a first printing, as is the case here, as well as 97 wood-engraved culs-de-lampe by Thompson after Devéria, from the 1827 edition. The third volume contains: - The very rare Supplément containing, in two parts, the Chansons politiques and the Chansons érotiques in their original edition. - The Chansons nouvelles et dernières, published in 1833, with a title vignette on the cover. These two works are without illustrations. The copy has been enriched with: - The complete set of ten green delivery covers for the Songs of 1828. - The complete suite of 103 steel-engraved medallion vignettes after Alfred and Tony Johannot, Charlier, Grenier, Grandville, etc., known as the Johannot suite, published in 1829 - 33, here in a blank print before the letter, to which are added the three additional vignettes published in 1834 (Gauls and Franks, after Raffet; The Pope's Son and The Infinitesimals), also in a blank print. All these vignettes have been distributed in the three volumes opposite the corresponding text. - The extremely rare complete set of twelve green covers of the album entitled Vignettes en taille douce par nos meilleurs artistes..., each illustrated with a different vignette, as well as the title and false title of the album. The latter was published in 1829 to contain the figures of the Johannot suite. - The portrait of Béranger engraved on wood by Lacoste after Charlet, a facsimile of a letter by Béranger, an important Notice on the author, and finally two leaves containing the original edition of the song Le pape musulman, all from the Perrotin edition of the Oeuvres of 1834. - a very beautiful original watercolour by Henri Monnier, signed and dated 1873, with autograph caption by the artist, added piece, loose. Superb and very rare set, of great quality. From the Victor Mercier library, with bookplate and collation notes in pencil on the endpapers, dated March and May 1895.
