BOSSUET (Jacques-Bénigne).
Discours sur l'histoire universelle. Preceded by a literary notice, by M. Tissot. Paris, Curmer, s.d. (1839). Two volumes in-4, half red long-grained morocco with corners, spines decorated with gilt filleting, untrimmed (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. A very fine edition, richly illustrated with a chromolithograph frontispiece by Féart, twelve plates out of text, including a superb portrait of Bossuet, engraved on steel after Meissonier, Tony Johannot, Murillo, Féart, in different frames, three particular frontispieces, one for each part, text frames of different types, lettering, ornaments, culs-de-lampe, all finely woodcut. An exceptional copy, one of the very few on China paper, with full margins, containing the plates outside the text in triple state (double state for two): before the frames and artists' proofs before any work, the latter state not reported by Carteret. Attached, bound in fine: - the original colour drawing of the general frontispiece signed by Féart; - a notice from the publisher concerning the delivery of the portrait of Bossuet and the death of the engraver; - a delivery cover.
