La reconnaissance de Sacountala, a Sanskrit drama translated from a unique manuscript in the King's Library, by A.-L. Chézy. Paris, Dondey-Dupré, 1832. In-8, contemporary binding in red morocco, gilt fillets with corner fleurons framing the boards and a large central cold-pressed plate, ornate spine, inner lace, gilt edges (Thouvenin). First edition of the second French translation (after that of Bruguière published in 1803) of this drama, considered the masterpiece of the Indian poet Calidasa (or Kâlidasâ), who flourished at the end of the ancient period. The text is one of the first Sanskrit works translated into European languages. Copy on strong vellum paper. Very beautiful decorated binding signed by Thouvenin. Minor foxing to a few leaves.
