The Museum of Natural History. History of the foundation and successive developments of the establishment... By Mr. P.-A. Cap et une société de savants et aides naturalistes du Muséum. Paris, Curmer, 1854. Two parts in one volume, large in-8, publisher's binding in full dark blue chagrin, large gilt plate signed Haarhaus on both covers with the title Les trois règnes de la nature in gilt letters. Museum, spine decorated throughout with special irons, inner lace, white moire endpapers, gilt edges. First edition. Frontispiece, three plans, one coloured botanical plate and 16 out-of-text portraits in steel engraved frames for the first part; two plans, 20 out-of-text plates of which 14 coloured for the second. All plates are protected by pink silk covers. Wood-engraved illustrations in the text by Pauquet, Gavarni, etc. The work forms the first part of a large publication undertaken by Curmer with the reworking of his Jardin des plantes of 1842-43 (n° 137 of the catalogue) under the title Les trois règnes de la nature, of which only three volumes were published (the two others by Le Maout and Gervais). A superb copy, preserved as new, without any foxing, in its beautiful publisher's binding decorated with a rich plate signed by Haarhaus. Exceptional condition. Slight oxidation browning on the edge of the endpapers.
