CERVANTES (Miguel de).
The ingenious hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha. Translated and annotated by Louis Viardot, vignettes by Tony Johannot. Paris, Dubochet et Cie, 1836-37. Two large volumes in-8, long-grained garnet morocco, on the boards interlacing gilt fillets with cold corner motifs in a frame of multiple gilt and cold fillets spines decorated in the same way, inner frame of morocco decorated with nine gilt fillets, lining and endpapers of cream moire, gilt edges, slipcases (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. Two frontispieces printed on chine, two ornate faux-titles and some 800 woodcut vignettes in the text by Tony Johannot. One of the most important books by the artist and the most richly illustrated of the period, together with Molière by the same Johannot. One of the very few copies on china paper, in absolutely perfect condition, superbly bound by Mercier. As is appropriate, the false titles are printed on vellum paper. From the libraries of Antoine Vautier (I, 1971, n° 47) and Henri Bonasse (1982, n° 17), with their bookplates.
