The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha. Translated and annotated by Louis Viardot, vignettes by Tony Johannot. Paris, Dubochet et Cie, 1836-37. Two large volumes in-8, contemporary binding in full midnight blue morocco with long grain, important rocaille gilt decoration on the boards and on the spines, gilt edges (G.Wagner). First edition. Two frontispieces printed on chine, two ornate faux-titles and some 800 woodcut vignettes in the text after Tony Johannot. One of the most important and richly illustrated books of the period, together with Molière by the same Johannot. Superb freshly decorated contemporary binding signed by Wagner. Very rare in this condition. The copy seems to have been washed and rebound. From the libraries of Alfred Clériceau, Charles Hayoit and Raoul Simonson, with their bookplates.
