EVANGILES (Les saints), translated from the Vulgate by M. l'abbé Dassance, vicar general of Montpellier. Illustrated by Messrs. Tony Johannot, Cavelier, Gérard-Séguin and Brevière. Paris, Curmer, 1836. Two large volumes in-8, contemporary bindings in glazed blue calf, double framed with gilt fillets with corner fleurons on the boards, spine with nerves decorated in the same way, inner lace, gilt edges (Bauzonnet). First edition. Chromolithograph frontispiece, 22 engravings out of text, twelve on steel and ten on wood, the latter printed on chine appliqué, and two coloured maps. Woodcut headpieces and lettering, those of the Preliminary Discourse here finely enhanced in colour and gold. The text of the Gospels is framed by a woodcut border. Each evangelist is illustrated with a special woodcut frontispiece, included in the pagination. One of the first books published by Curmer. A very fine and scarce copy, elegantly bound in the period by Bauzonnet. Without the captioned serpents protecting the steel engravings, replaced by blank silk paper. Slight foxing to a few leaves.
