GRANDE VILLE (La), a new comic, critical and philosophical p - Lot 116
GRANDE VILLE (La), a new comic, critical and philosophical picture of Paris... Paris, Maresq, 1844. Two large volumes in-8, half-maroquin blue with corners, spines decorated with rocaille irons, untrimmed, gilt head, yellow printed covers preserved (A. Devauchelle). First edition. Two ornate titles, two frontispieces, 29 out-of-text figures and more than 150 vignettes in the text, all wood-engraved after Gavarni, Victor Adam, Daumier, Daubigny, Henry Emy, Traviès, Henri Monnier... The texts are by Paul de Kock, Balzac, Dumas, Soulié, Gozlan, Briffault, etc. This is a resale copy of the 1842-43 edition with new covers and titles renewed at the 1844 date. This new issue is enriched in comparison with the first one by 12 out-of-text figures in volume I (and not 11 as Carteret erroneously indicates), as well as by the two ornate titles and the two frontispieces: Paris aujourd'hui for volume I and Le dîner est le prétexte for volume II, all of them here in the first printing. "A very important work, remarkable for the fine array of literary and artistic figures of the Romantic period who collaborated in it" (Carteret, III, p.280).
