SWIFT (Jonathan). Gulliver's travels in distant lands. Illustrated edition by Grandville. New translation. Paris, Fournier aîné, Furne et Cie, 1838. Two volumes in-8, contemporary binding in tobacco chagrin lined with red morocco, double set of gilt fillets framing the boards, lining decorated with a double set of four straight and broken gilt fillets intersecting in a frame of bold and light fillets, gilt edges (Capé). First edition. General woodcut frontispiece by Brévière, printed on chine volant, four title-frontispieces and 450 woodcut vignettes by Grandville. "This very beautiful illustrated romance is of great rarity in fine condition, it is printed on tinted vellum paper; this paper without glue is often stained with pitting and many washers have had the mistake of bleaching it to the detriment of the velvetiness of the admirable woodcuts. Also to be looked for unstained in contemporary bindings" (Carteret, III, p. 578). A copy in the most exceptional, if not unique, condition, in a beautiful lined binding of the period signed by a master and practically free of foxing (1). (1) A few faint and not very annoying brown spots on about fifteen leaves of volume I, otherwise impeccable; the paper has kept its beautiful original colour.
