Right leaf of a deeply carved diptych representing... - Lot 10 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Right leaf of a deeply carved diptych representing the Crucifixion accompanied by the Virgin and Saint John, under a series of three arcatures with gables, hooks and fleurons. Trace of green monochrome on the background, the gables and the redents of the arcatures. Beautifully executed. Lorraine, circa 1360-1380 Height: 7.7 cm - Width: 5.3 cm - Thickness: 0.8 cm - Weight: 38 g (two fixing holes on the bottom) The gracefulness of the gables, the elongation of the figures as well as the particular refinement in the treatment of the draperies bring this lovely leaf closer to two examples of Crucifixion preserved in museums in eastern France, one in the Musée lorrain de Nancy (inv. III.964, fig.a), the other in the Musée de l'oeuvre Notre-Dame in Strasbourg (inv.MAD IL.55, fig.b). It thus seems to belong to a production of this region that Professor Sarah M. Guérin situates in Metz in the catalogue on the gothic ivories of the Calouste Gulbenkian collection which keeps a diptych of this school (inv. 186). The green monochromy of the background can be observed on some plates, notably on a left-hand sheet showing the Adoration of the Magi in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (inv. AN 1685 A.581), which is considered to be the remains of a blue corresponding to the sky (fig. c). Works consulted: P. Williamson and G.
