Right leaf of a deeply carved ivory diptych... - Lot 13 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Right leaf of a deeply carved ivory diptych representing the Crucifixion under a series of three arcatures, the middle one more important, with gables, fleurons and hooks, the spandrels incised with trefoil motifs. On a cross with its bark, Christ is framed by the Virgin and Saint John, each holding a closed book in one hand and making a gesture of affliction with the other; beautiful pleating of the garments which fall in vertical folds or "à becs" with piped falls. Paris or Cologne, mid-14th century Height: 13.1 cm - Width: 9.4 cm - Thickness: 1.3 cm - Weight: 210 g (minor damage to hinges) Works consulted: H. Schnitzler, F. Volbach, P. Bloch, Skulpturen, Elfenbein, Perlmutter, Stein, Holz, Europäisches Mittelalter, Sammlung E. und M. Kofler- Truninger, Lucerne, T.1, 1964; K. G. Beuckers, Mittelelterliche Elfenbainarbeiten aus der Sammlung des Badischen Landesmuseums Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, 1999, cat. 7, p. 61-63. This heavy Crucifixion leaf - which was to have been opposite a Nativity or a Glorious Virgin - is to be compared with other diptychs that were very likely made in the same workshop. These are the one in the Karlsruhe Museum, of slightly smaller dimensions (inv. no. C 7086, fig.a), the right-hand pane of a diptych in the Institute of Arts in Detroit (inv. no. 24.69, fig.b), which is smaller, and another in the former Kofler collection (no. S 88, fig.c). The same series of three arcatures, with a larger median, are decorated with trefoil motifs and similar attitudes of the figures. In particular, the Karlsruhe and Kofler flaps show identical draperies on St. John's robe and cloak, indicating the same authorship. The opinion of the specialists hesitates on the location of the workshop between Paris and Cologne in the Rhineland. The folio presented here, with its fine quality of execution, thus enriches this interesting corpus.
