Large left leaf of an ivory diptych carved... - Lot 16 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Large left leaf of an ivory diptych carved in high relief with green monochrome highlights representing the Glorious Virgin under a large arcature with redents, surmounted by a gable with fleuron and hooks, cantoned with pinnacles. The Virgin is carrying the Child on her left arm, heads bowing towards each other; on either side, cerulean angels with smiling faces, the left one with a bent body. Cologne, attributed to the Master of the Berlin Triptych, ca. 1325-1350 Height: 15.2 cm - Width: 7.9 cm - Depth: 1.1 cm - Weight: 162 g This beautiful plate is very close to another left-hand leaf in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which is attributed to the Master of the Berlin Triptych (inv. no. 71.7, fig.). Here, the quality of the chisel, the accentuated curves of the bodies and the attractive faces support this attribution. Book consulted: R. H. Randall, The Golden Age of Ivory - Gothic Carvings in North American Collections, New York, 1993, cat.122.
