Diptych in ivory carved in high relief representing... - Lot 21 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Diptych in ivory carved in high relief representing the Adoration of the Magi on the left panel and the Crucifixion on the right panel under a series of three arcatures with gables decorated with flowers, hooks and pinnacles, green monochrome background and gold highlights. Left leaf: the Virgin is seated on the right with the Child standing on her lap, the star in clouds above her head; before her, the group of three Kings, each holding his gift in one hand; the oldest, Melchior, is kneeling in the foreground kissing one of Jesus' feet, his crown in his right hand and presenting him with a pyxis with an open lid in the other hand Right leaf: Christ is on a scooped cross, his legs bent out to the left, his feet superimposed in external rotation, between two groups of figures, the Virgin's Paleo supported by three holy women and Saint John in an attitude of affliction in front of two Jewish priests. The almond motifs on the pinnacles of the arches seem to be blazoned with a fess and underlined with sable. Beautifully made. Paris, circa 1350-1360 Height: 12.7 cm - Width of leaf: 9.1 cm - Thickness of leaf: 0.8 cm - Weight: 268 g (leaves detached, clasp and hinges missing, hole in the right leaf, wear to the gilding) Provenance: private collection, Brittany This beautiful diptych, in an excellent state of preservation, is fairly representative of the production of the Parisian workshops in the middle of the 14th century. Although produced in series, these ivory works almost always contain original details, as in this case: the somewhat contorted position of the left arm of the old magus, vertical with a broken wrist, a pyxis in the palm of the hand. With its green background, perhaps originally blue, highlighting the heads of the figures, some nimbed with gold, and its gilded frame, this diptych from a Breton collection must have been very precious.
