Ordo Fratrum Praedicatorum (Order of Friars Preachers) Xylography coloured Venice, 1494 Height: 14 cm - Width: 9.4 cm (laminated on vellum, small tears) This rare xylography was the frontispiece of a processional of the Dominican Order first printed in Venice in 1494 by Joannes Emericus de Spira for L. A. Giunta.A. Giunta. It shows St Dominic at the bottom, seated on a throne, holding out to his brothers and sisters the book of the Constitutions of the Order or the Processional itself. Above, the coat of arms of the Order, a silver shield caped Sable, in base a dog with a flaming torch in its gules, the whole framed by four Dominican saints carrying banners: FIDES (fidelity) for St. Peter Martyr, S[C]IENTIA (science) for St. Thomas Aquinas, IVDICIVM (judgement) for St. Vincent Ferrier and AMOR (love) for St. Catherine of Siena. In the upper part, the Virgin holding in her hands the white scapular and the black cope of the Order is framed by St. Peter and St. Paul; above, three angels presenting a banner on which is inscribed one of the mottos of the Order: LAVDARE, BENEDICERE, PREDICARE (to praise, to bless, to preach) Book consulted: H.
