Bronze mortarboard decorated with terms with feather headdress and fleur-de-lis; rim inscribed * ALLEN * RICHAR * M * DVSABLE *; fluted grips. Aunis, Master of Newfoundland, early 17th century Height: 11.3 cm - Diameter: 15 cm (some missing edges) The name Master of Newfoundland was given to a founder from the La Rochelle region after the castle near Fontenay-le-Comte (Vendée), where four of his mortars were found; these have bracketed terms with a lion's head capped with feathers, often accompanied by fleur-de-lys as here.
