Acephalous faun in carved Costoza stone.... - Lot 71 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Acephalous faun in carved Costoza stone. The right leg forward, the other thrown back, the bust in strong torsion, the faun seems to dance, one arm raised, the other lowered. Veneto, 16th century Height: 53.5 cm Plinth (visible lacks, slight erosion) This sculpture was found in the garden of the Villa Cornaro near Padua. It shows the sculptor's desire to express great dynamism in an innovative position for the time when ancient statuary was being rediscovered. A statuette of a faun on a bronze inkstand from the Riccio school, preserved in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, already shows a similar research in the 1530s/40s (fig.). The Roman marble of the Dancing Faun in the Uffizi, which may give an idea of the complete sculpture, does not show such a marked gestural tension. This is therefore already a very mannerist expression of the subject. Book consulted: W. Bode, The Italian Bronze statuettes of te Renaissance, New York, 1980, pl.CCXLII
