Ivory plate finely carved in high relief... - Lot 93 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Ivory plate finely carved in high relief representing the Lamentation at the foot of the cross, taken from an engraving by Gilles Rousselet (ca. 1660-1678) after Charles Le Brun (fig.a). In the centre of the composition, the Virgin is seated, leaning against the stipe, her hands bound, her gaze imploring heaven, Christ lying at her feet; on the left, Mary Magdalene bends over the Saviour's head in an attitude of affliction; to the right, two holy women, one holding the crown of thorns, in different attitudes of despair; in the background, St. John stands leaning against the ladder set up against the cross; in the foreground, the pincers and the hammer; in the distance on the right, a temple of classical architecture on a hillside background. Southern Germany, Augsburg? end of the 17th century Height: 15.7 cm - Width: 11.8 cm - Thickness: 1.8 cm (upper right corner glued back together) This ivory plaque is a very fine piece of workmanship and can be linked to the circle of sculptors working in southern Germany. It is reminiscent of the large plaque of the Descent from the Cross by an anonymous artist who worked at the court of Munich and is kept in the Bavarian State Museum (fig. b). It is not unusual, at a time when engravings were circulating in workshops all over Europe, for this composition by a French painter to have served as an inspiration for a German ivory worker. For example, the great Viennese sculptor Johann Caspar Schenck executed two bas-reliefs on ivory based on engravings by Jacques Callot, which can be seen in the Museum of Art History in the Austrian capital.
