Storm in Ibiza, circa 1933 Watercolour on paper. Signed lower right. H_40 cm W_52 cm Frances Hodgkins is one of the most renowned New Zealand painters. After a training in her native country, she joined Europe in 1901 in London. Travelling artist, Frances Hodgkins travels through Europe and participates in various training courses throughout the old continent. In 1903, she became the first New Zealand artist to be exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In 1907, she had her first solo exhibition in London. In 1910, she moved to Paris and taught at the Colarossi Academy. From the 1920s onwards her style became more modernist, she introduced abstract and simplified forms into her work. Her mixture of artistic genres was taken a step further when she decided to merge landscapes and self-portraits. She died in Dorchester in 1947.
