BAILLY, Jean-Sylvain
Lettres sur l'origine des sciences et sur celle des peuples de l'Asie. [And :] Lettres sur l'Atlantide de Platon et sur l'ancienne histoire de l'Asie. London & Paris, Elmesly & de Bure, 1777-1779. 2 volumes in-8 (198 x 120 mm) of 2 ff.n.ch., 348 pp. for Sciences ; 2 ff.n.ch., 443 pp., 1 large engraved folding map for Plato. Speckled basane, double gilt fillet on spine, spotted edges (contemporary binding). Original editions. In Histoire de l'astronomie Bailly (1736-1793) had established that the origin of science came from ancient peoples in Asia, a theory strongly contested by Voltaire. These two volumes reproduce some of the letters from this controversy. Spellings, worm gallery on one spine.
