BEAUZÉE, Nicolas
General Grammar, or Reasoned Exposition of the Necessary Elements of Language, to Serve as a Basis for the Study of all Languages. Paris, J. Barbou, 1767. 2 volumes in-8 (180 x 116 mm) of 1 f.n.ch., XLVIII, 619 pp. for volume I ; 2 f.n.ch., 664 pp., 2 f.n.ch. Marbled calf, spine with ornamented nerves, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the work which earned its author a gold medal from Maria Theresa of Austria and the post of professor at the royal military school of Paris. "Beauzée applies a rigorous spirit to the linguistics of his time and accentuates the logical character which has been manifested in it since Port-Royal. It is undoubtedly with Beauzée that one can find the most complete synthesis and the most complete sum of the achievements of the various "general grammars" of his time" (universalis). Nice copy of this great classic.
